I always thought the idea that “hope springs eternal” was some turn of phrase from the 1920s about tortured baseball fans, probably in Philadelphia, thinking that the spring always represented a time for hope. Of course, until Connie Mack and the Athletics had to deal with Babe Ruth’s Yankees or Walter Johnson’s Senators.
